Eva is 6 months...and her birth story

I just read my cousin's birth story, and it reminded me how much I love hearing them. So now that I'm not quite so frustrated with several things that happened during Eva's birth I will share how her sweet little spirit came into this world.

I awoke at about 3:30 am with contractions probably 3 minutes apart, they weren't too intense yet, the morning before at my Dr's appointment he had told me I was at a 5 almost 6, so I probably should have jumped out of bed and into the car and gone to the hospital. However, the contractions were manageable and I had had several occasions where I would have contractions and they would go away. So I got up, mentioned to Andrew I was having contractions and I would keep him updated. I proceeded to go into the bathroom and do my hair and put on a little makeup. This sounds ridiculous, but you know that right after you have that baby people are going to be taking your picture.

At about 4 the contractions were getting more intense so I woke up Andrew and told him it was time to go. He grabbed the bag, gave me a blessing in the kitchen, and my mom sent us on our way.

We arrived to the hospital ER since it was so early, the contractions were getting pretty bad at this point, I was actually having to breathe through them and stop doing whatever it was I was doing. The reception lady decided to take her sweet time and then told me to wait in the waiting room until they called me , did she not see that I was in labor? About 5 minutes later a nurse from labor and delivery came and took me back to the labor and delivery room.

After I got dressed and prepped they checked me and I was at a seven. No one had mentioned or asked me about an epidural at this point, so I told them I would be interested in getting one, especially since I was about to go through transition, the most painful part of labor. They looked at me like I had two heads which was not a good sign. They said they would have to test my platelets and then they could give me the epidural once the results came back, I said ok. Little did I know testing my blood platelets would take over an hour and that would be too late.

So we waited, very impatiently for the blood work. Andrew was so great, holding my hand as I went through transition with no pain meds, screaming things like "I don't want to have this baby natural!" and other such things we laughed about later. I was actually screaming, if you know me well you know I do not scream. Andrew left for just a minute to see how things were coming with the blood work, where the nurse laughed at him for asking if we could speed it along, and at that point my water broke. There was a nurse in my room getting things ready for delivery and I yelled at her "I think my water just broke!" as liquid is gushing out of me. She proceeds to check me and say "No, I don't think so." Are you kidding me? Yes it did!

After that I felt like pushing. I wasn't saying much at this point. I had pretty much gone into myself to deal with the pain (which I had not prepared for! I think it would have been ok if I had practiced some natural birth methods but I planned on an epidural). The nurse looked at me and then asked Andrew "Does she look like she's trying to push?" He looks at her and says "I don't know!" She asks me if I want to push and I say "YES!" She calls the Dr who thankfully came within a matter of minutes. He walks in asks if he has time to change, the nurses and I all yell "NO!" so he throws on a cover up and his gloves, as he's putting the gloves on I yell "I want to push!" He says go for it and I push, twice, and there she was.

So perfect, so precious, so loud! She was amazing, and worth all the work and craziness that had occurred in those few hours before her birth. I still wanted to take out a couple of those nurses, but holding her even made them a little more tolerable.

And now she is six months old! How time flies. She is so fun. She talks to us, and gets so excited when we come to get her out of bed, she loves eating, when I give her a baby biscuit or rice rusk I can't get it to her fast enough, and as soon as it hits her hand it's straight in the mouth. She is sitting up on her own better and better, and is so close to crawling, although she gets around pretty well without actually "crawling" with a series of scoots and rolls. We love her.

This is her "I'm so excited!!!" face, with a little jump thrown in for good measure.

I still cannot believe those people are nurses. Good thing that was not your first baby! I would have been traumatized for life!

She is a cutie! Can't wait to see her again!
